The Human Milk Institute (HMI) at UC San Diego brings together researchers, clinicians, and educators to advance the science of human milk and lactation. Through research, education, and collaboration, HMI works to improve maternal and child health and translate discoveries into clinical practice and public health.

Integrated Transporter Elucidation Center (InTEC) is an NIH-funded research center that studies placental transporters and their role in moving medications, nutrients, and other compounds between mother and fetus. Its goal is to improve medication safety and maternal and fetal health during pregnancy.

Project Description
The overarching goal of the project is to develop a novel platform using exosome profiling as biomarkers to monitor placental-mediated adverse pregnancy outcomes and response to therapeutics. Using preeclampsia as the model condition and aspirin as the therapeutic agent, the study will conduct a prospective observational

observational cohort study of people receiving aspirin for preeclampsia prevention to develop and validate extracellular vesicle proteome profiles of placental function, evaluate associations with aspirin exposure, and examine relationships with angiogenic biomarkers and clinical outcomes.
